SimpleClip Privacy Policy
The Short Version
- Your videos, photos, voice and the faces in them are edited on your iPhone. SimpleClip never uploads them.
- We keep general statistics about how the app is used, and crash reports, to make it better.
- If you write to us through the app, we receive what you send.
- No ads. No account. We don't sell your data or track you across other apps.
What Stays on Your iPhone
SimpleClip does its editing on your device: trimming, cutting, cropping, face detection and blur, following people, transcripts and subtitles, Quick Cut, AI voices, video and audio cleanup, and exporting. None of your videos, photos, recordings or their words are sent to us or to anyone else.
- Videos and photos you add are read from your library or Files and stay on your device. Exports are saved to your Photos library.
- Faces. To blur or follow people, the app finds faces in your video and makes a numerical description of each one (a "face print"), so it can tell the same person apart across a video. Face prints and scan results are stored only on your device, in SimpleClip's own storage (part of which shows in the Files app), and they are included in your device's backups like the rest of the app's data. You can erase them any time in the app: About → Erase Face Scan Data. Settings → Cache All Scan Results controls whether scans are kept for next time.
- Speech. Transcripts and subtitles are made on your device by Apple's speech recognition. The words heard are kept on your device so a video doesn't have to be listened to twice.
- Projects (your edits, captions, text, drawings and recordings) are saved in SimpleClip's storage on your device. SimpleClip's documents folder is visible in the Files app.
- Camera and microphone are used only when you record: Show & Tell's camera bubble, and voiceovers. Recordings stay in your project.
What We Collect
Usage Statistics (Google Firebase Analytics)
Like most apps, SimpleClip keeps general usage statistics, so we can see which features people enjoy and what to make easier: for example, which tools get used and whether exports finish. They come with basic details such as the app and iOS version, the device model and the country, and Google tells devices apart with a random app identifier, never your name, your Apple ID or an advertising identifier. They never include your videos, photos or recordings, the faces or words in them, anything you type, or file names.
Crash Reports (Google Firebase Crashlytics)
When the app crashes or a task fails, a report with technical details is sent: what the app was doing, the error message (with file names and folder paths taken out before it is sent), the app and iOS versions, and the device model.
Purchases (Apple)
SimpleClip Pro is bought through Apple. Apple handles payment, and we never see your payment details or Apple ID. The app keeps your Pro status on your device, and our usage statistics record which plan was chosen and whether a purchase finished.
Messages You Send Us
If you use "Submit a Bug or Feature Request" or write to us, we receive your message, the name and email you choose to give (both optional in the app), and the app and iOS versions. In-app messages are stored with Google Cloud Firestore and forwarded to the developer's phone through Pushover, a notification service. Your name and email are also remembered on your device to fill the form next time.
Downloads the App Makes
Some features download files the first time you use them: songs and sound effects from the Internet Archive (archive.org) and Wikimedia Commons, AI voice models from GitHub, and speech models from Apple. Like any download, those servers see your device's internet address, and the music servers see which track was requested. We send them no information about you.
What We Don't Do
- We don't upload your videos, photos, recordings, faces or transcripts.
- We don't show ads, sell your data, or share it for advertising.
- We don't track you across other companies' apps or websites, and the app never asks for Apple's advertising identifier.
- We don't collect your location.
- You don't need an account.
Who Processes Data for Us
How Long Data Is Kept
- Data on your device stays until you delete it in the app or delete the app.
- Usage statistics are kept by Google for up to 14 months.
- Crash reports are kept by Google for about 90 days.
- Messages you send are kept until we have dealt with them, and deleted on request.
Your Choices and Rights
- Erase face scan data in the app (About → Erase Face Scan Data), or delete SimpleClip to remove everything it stored on your device.
- Turn camera, microphone and Photos access on or off in iOS Settings at any time.
- Ask us to see or delete a message you sent, or anything else we hold about you:support@simpleclip.com.
- Depending on where you live (for example the EU, the UK or California), you may have rights to access, correct, delete or object to the use of your personal data. We will honor them. We do not sell or share personal information as California law defines those terms.
Children
SimpleClip is a general-audience app and is not directed to children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. Many people use SimpleClip to edit videos of their kids; those videos, and the faces in them, stay on the device.
Security
Data sent to Google, Pushover and Apple travels over encrypted connections. Data on your device is protected by your iPhone's own security.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update it here and change the effective date. If a change matters to how your data is used, we'll say so in the app.
